Workshop Description

A 3-day astronaut training experience for certified scuba divers.

Train with certified astronaut instructors through realistic underwater EVA (spacewalk) simulations designed to prepare you for the next generation of commercial spaceflight.

Over three intensive days, you’ll learn how astronauts operate in a mission environment, from human life support systems and EVA procedures to crew communication, mission planning, and Crew Resource Management (CRM). Through multiple underwater simulations, classroom sessions, and safety briefings, you’ll develop the discipline, teamwork, and decision-making skills required to perform under pressure.

This program is designed for those who aspire to be part of the emerging space economy, where future astronauts will not only explore space but build, service, and maintain the infrastructure that powers it.

Prerequisite: Prior scuba diving experience mandatory.

Day 1. EVA Foundations and Neutral Buoyancy Operations

Participants begin with an introduction to human spaceflight, the history of Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA), and how NASA, ESA, and other space agencies use neutral buoyancy to prepare astronauts for spacewalks. The classroom session covers EVA mission planning, spacesuit systems, life support concepts, crew roles, safety, communications, and the challenges of working in microgravity. The afternoon transitions into the water, where participants develop EVA movement techniques, neutral buoyancy, tether management, controlled translation, astronaut communication procedures, and basic spacewalk operations around a simulated spacecraft environment.

Day 2. Space Station Assembly, Maintenance, and EVA Operations

The second day focuses on the practical skills required to build, inspect, maintain, and repair spacecraft and future commercial space stations. Participants learn EVA worksite organization, astronaut tools, task execution, inspection techniques, anomaly response, and mission decision-making before completing increasingly complex underwater simulations. Working as astronaut teams, they perform realistic EVA tasks including structural assembly, equipment installation, inspections, maintenance, troubleshooting, and coordinated operations while communicating with their crewmates and simulated Mission Control.

Day 3. Full Mission Simulation and EVA Certification

The final day culminates in a complete astronaut mission simulation. Participants plan, brief, and execute a full underwater EVA as a two-person crew, applying the knowledge and skills developed throughout the course. The mission includes translating to a worksite, completing assembly and maintenance objectives, responding to operational challenges, maintaining continuous communications, and returning safely to the airlock. The workshop concludes with a professional mission debrief, performance evaluation, and presentation of the BLINC Space Underwater EVA Analog Operations Certificate, recognizing successful completion of the program and readiness for advanced astronaut analog training.
